Event Information

Castle Design Under the Greatest Knight - Talk by Neil Ludlow

Join leading Pembroke Castle historian, Neil Ludlow, as he looks at the construction of the castle.

Pembroke Castle, like William Marshal’s other castles, is often thought to have been influenced by the castles of the French king, Philip II Augustus. In this talk, Neil will show that Marshal was instead influenced by the works of his royal patrons – the Plantagenet kings – in both France and England. Neil will also take a close look at Pembroke’s magnificent cylindrical keep, built by Marshal between 1201 and 1207, offering suggestions on how it might have been used, and exploring its relationships with other round towers in the Plantagenet domain.

The talk will begin at 19:00 in Western Hall, and last for approx. 1 hour.

Tickets are £3 and are available from Pembroke Castle Gift Shop and online.
